If you think of "could" only as being the past tense of "can", you will get confused by the many ways it is used in English. It can be used in the past, the present and the future, to softer something said, to show ability, possibility, make polite requests and much more. Here are a few example:
Often we use it to be polite when requesting something:
"Could you please pass me the bread."
Sometimes we use it to emphasie something that is annoying us:
"Could you PLEASE STOP MAKING SO MUCH NOISE!" (This is not so much a question as a demand.)
We use "could" when talking about things we often/habitually did in the past:
When I lived near Adelaide I could visit the museum and art gallery whenever I wanted. Now that I live on Kangaroo Island, I can only do that when I visit the city.
"Could" can be used in the same way as 'might' to say that something in the future is possible, but not certain:
It could rain later this afternoon.
"Could" can be used to show ability:
We could go swimming this afternoon if you'd like.
Only yesterday I was working on "could", "would" and "should" with one of my English Language Farmstay students. She had been having a lot of difficulty because she had thought they were only used in the past tense. I hope my short notes I used for her are helpful for you too.

I've read all this but I meant that in many cases I get puzzled to solve the problem for example: as u explained that could can be used for ability so I ask the same is got by the use of can coz it's also shows ability so what,s the difference?and the same thing is in may, would.....I think, as for I got, would might could are colloquial and used to as compare to will may and could!m I right in this ?
