I'm learning Japanese, too. You should probably get a hiragana and katakana chart and a Japanese dictionary. Japanese is a syllabary, not exactly an alphabet. This means that instead of individual letters like A, B, and C, you get pairs of sounds like Ka, Ki, and Ku. Then you should practice writing words in hiragana and katakana. This is how I started. It's rough learning a new writing system, so hang in there!
