Explanation:
Au XVII-XVIIIe siècle, les pauvres mangeaient des carottes cuites pour accompagner la viande. Apparemment, 'avoir ses carottes cuites' signifiait être mourant, prêt à être mangé avec des carottes (ironie). Par extension, l'expression s'est déformée et désigne une situation sans espoir. Around XVII-XVIIIth century, poor people would eat cooked carots with their meat. Apparently, for one to 'have their carots cooked' would mean (ironically) to be ready to be eaten with these carots. By extension, the expression evolved and is used for hopeless situations.
