Besides being the first capitol, Philadelphia was one of quite a few different cities in the US that was bought from the native people - not taken. William Penn purchased the land from the local people and it's history began. My city, which is less than five miles away was also purchased from the native people, but has shrunk greatly while Philly has grown.
