Social status is better determined by a person's ability to reason, not be crude or rude when necessary, desire to hear people out -- even if they don't agree -- and then make choices and speak based on doing those things. Whether fat or skinny, rich or poor, powerful or benign, the people who do good for others generally end up doing best for themselves.
