soy (ser) means that you are, and it is used when you talk about identity
yo soy un panda

estoy (estar) also means that you are, but is used to talk about locations, emotions etc...
yo estoy en el coche
yo estoy muy triste

Re:French questions in Passé composé
"As-tu beaucoup mangé?" (for one person that you know well)
If it is more than one person, or if you do not know that person or want to show your respect to him/her):
"Avez-vous beaucoup mangé?"

Passé composé (HAVE in present tense + PARTICIPLE): "as mangé" or "avez mangé"

Here, you do not need to translate food, what is obvious does not need to be translated in French.
