Re:Using American slang when writing.
Actually, it's not necessarily acceptable in the US, either. I only hear/see it used by people who learned (or are learning) English as a second language or if I were to read my teenagers' text conversations. In normal every day conversation, it is not used.

Re:Why?
Hi Cyryn!

Learning the right pronunciation in English could be the difference between using offensive words or not.

For example:

Beach /bēCH/ Vs. Bitch /biCH/

"I like this beach" instead of "I like this bitch".

OR

Whole/Hole /hōl/ Vs. Whore /hôr/*

"I see a lot of holes in this shirt" instead of "I see a lot of whores in this shirt".

*The last example is more for those who are native to languages that have difficultly with letters that are similar in pronunciation like "L" and "R".

I hope this helps!! ;)

Re:why didn't we say buy?
Read (not red) is the past tense of read. Although the present and past tense are spelt the same, they are pronounced differently. READ (present) is pronounced as REED and READ, (past tense) is pronounced RED.

Similarly, BUY is present tense and BOUGHT is past tense so it is incorrect to say, "What is the last book you buy".

Correct pronunciation is important in all languages as it ensures that people are able to understand each other and demonstrates a respect for the English culture

Using American slang when writing.
Non - native English speakers often make the mistake of using American slang words such as WANNA (want to) GONNA (going to) in their writing. I've noticed that Japanese people, in particular, do this.
Use of such words may be acceptable in America, but it's unacceptable in other English speaking countries.

Re:Why?
For me, is to avoid trouble when talking to other people. For example is when the person you are talking to misheard that might cause misunderstanding and to prevent embarassment from others.
