Re:language exchange in seattle
Hello Claire,

If you are still interested, I need a language partner in this area to help me practice Chinese, however I am still at a very low level. I will help you with English too. Would you like to chat?

Hi!

Pinyin for °ì¹«ÊÒ should be: ban-gong-shi. By the way, ÄãºÃshould be: Nihao.

Contact me if you want to learn Chinese and hopefully you can teach me English.

Re:i am a game programmer and player, anyone wanna join in?
I usually make my decision based on the computer requirements of the games that I want to play. I would say that about 64mb should be enough unless you are into the newest 3d games, like DOOM3, then you should probably go for a 128mb graphics card. I usually use ATI graphics cards, because I haven't had any troubles with them.

Re:Re:Re:EAGER TO LEARN KOREAN AND CHINESE, BUT...
Have you tried buying some Pimsleur tapes/DVD? Pimsleur is a company that makes a lot of tapes for people to learn different languages. I have bought some German tapes and my wife has bought some Chinese tapes. Both of us find those tapes to be quite helpful. I would assume that tapes and DVD's are probably cheaper than taking classes. But of course, if you were to take a class, there is an instructor who can correct your pronounciations.

Re:HOW CAN I LOADDOWN ALL THE E-MAILS IN ONE TIME
Hi Lin,

I always click on the link that says, "View all messages" But I think that may not be what you're asking. I guess you want to download the entire message database and view it all off-line in a single page or something like that.

I haven't seen anything like that anywhere.

But try contacting the site management, on "Contact us" Dan Yuen handles all of those messages, and I've always found him more than helpful.

I look forward to learning what you find out.

Are you new to the site? »¶Ó! (Huan1 ying2)

Re:Chinese Computer Language Question 2
Hi Abby,

Here¡¦s my reply to your message #2. I can¡¦t seem to find your message 1 anywhere. Did it get put on later, or do you maybe need to try posting it again?

The strange information you see in many of the windows occur because international characters have been encoded so that they can be recognized by your browser. You¡¦re not seeing the international characters in their intended form because you haven¡¦t set your browser up to decode them. If you are using MS Internet Explorer, you can go to the View menu and select Encoding / More. You will see a listing of many different languages, including, perhaps three settings for Chinese. You may have to try all of these in order to find the one that makes the Chinese characters come up correctly.

I have to confess that I don¡¦t have software on my computer that lets me generate these characters. I had a program some years ago when I was taking Chinese, but it¡¦s not compatible with my current version of Windows. So unless I can say what I want to say by rearranging characters my correspondent used in her message to me, I am stuck with using PinYin Romanization to express myself in Chinese.

If anyone is aware of a font or a program I can download that will allow me to enter Chinese Characters on MLE, please let me know.

I tried going online and looking at this text in your message, but the copy in your message isn¡¦t working correctly. Can you get me the message number of the post where you found this?

Thanks.

To Zhangyan re fixing funny quote marks

Hi Zhangyan.

I noticed your quote marks came out funny when you used them in your last message, like in ¡°tian tian kuai le¡±. MS word always converts the standard " style "striaight quotes" into the 66 99 style "smart quotes," which aren’t printable on the MLE bulletin boards. So they come out looking funny, ¡° ¡±. You either have to change them back after you paste them into the create message page, or you can undo the conversion immediately after you type them in by typing Alt-Backspace right away after MS-Word converts the character.

You can even disable this automatic conversion of quotes on the Tools Menu, in Autocorrect options. Click the "Autoformat as you type" tab, and uncheck the very first selection, "Straight quotes" with "smart quotes."
