I wish to achieve a goal, some say it is crazy but why let that stop me. I would like to learn Japanese, French, Spanish, and Chinese both Mandarin and Cantonese. If you would like to help me with any of these, I would be grateful, and more than willing to help you perfect you English.

Je souhaite réaliser un but, certains disent qu'il est fou mais pourquoi laissiez cet arrêt je. Je voudrais apprendre la mandarine japonaise, française, espagnole, et de Chinois et cantonais. Nice job with the Japanese and Chinese! How did you make your Asian texts appear with the Chinese Characters and the Kanji and everything?
So far, I haven't been able to see any characters people type that don't use the basic Western European alphabets. I speak some Mandarin, and I'd love to be able to put Chinese into my messages when occasion calls for it.
I appreciate anything you can do to help. And good luck with your exciting, ambitious goals. I would love to do something like that myself. As it stands, I have to be satisfied, for now, with perfecting my Spanish and taking up Portuguese.

Hi!
Your goal is quite admirable, and there is nothing crazy in it.
Have you already got grammar books and dictionaries of the languages you mentioned? While the automatic Internet translator used here is a nice tool for extracting meanings from a foreign language, it is not quite up to the task of producing real translations, and its output should not be trusted in language studying.

Arigatou gozaimasu for your message. I used the translation page supplied by language exchange to get the characters to show up in my text, a simple cut and paste job. I didn't want to exclude anyone especially when asking for assitance:)Good luck with your goals as well.

Where to begin
In my message 44785 in reply to Adam's question about reading materials, I talked some about my own experience, and how I worked up from reading very basic stuff to reading Medieval Spanish poetry in just a couple of years.
What I keep running into over and over again as a graduate student in a discipline where language is a fundamental part of our work, is that teaching grammar rules and doing drilling exercises, according to the research and literature, isn't particularly helpful for developing language skills (certainly not in English). On the other hand, my thinking and my experience, both as a student and as a teacher suggest that paying attention to grammar rules and being aware of how they work can and does help move the learning process along.
The point of all of this is, I learn the rules, and then I throw the book away. The bulk of my work is just picking stuff up and reading it, and looking up only those words I have to look up in order to understand what I'm reading. I read books voraciously. I watch movies and listen to radio, and I do all of this in Spanish as much as I can. My brain will take it all in over time if I give it the chance.
I don't know if that makes any difference or not. Anyway, let me know more about your confusion if you'd like any suggestions.
