es solo cuando estas hablando de ellos con otra persona que no los conosca, si estas hablando con ellos, o alguna persona que los conosca los llamas por el nombre (it's only when you are talking with someone that doesn't know them if you speak with them, your parents or someone that knows the you call them bye their name)
