For some reason we have many words for wolf in norwegian, especially in the folktales, where they often say that they are as hungry as a wolf. I think people in the old days invented so many names because they thought it was dangerous to say the wolf's true name. The common norwegian word for wolf is 'ulv,' but I've also read that people used to call it 'Gråbein' and 'Varg.'
