Description |
I am looking for a teacher with whom I can study beginning Modern Hebrew for five weeks, beginning approximately Dec 21, 2005. I currently am a Junior at University of Maryland and will be home for winter mini-session during that period. Specifically I need to learn the first ten chapters of HEBREW FROM SCRATCH PART 1 WITH DICTIONARY, by Chayat. This would be in preparation for Part 2 which I plan to take Spring semester at UMD, beginning at the end of January. (Secondarily I may be interested in some additional tutoring during the semester if I find I need it.) I am flexible about dedicating as much time as required to achieve the goal and I would need a teacher willing to support me in that My only training in Hebrew was at a Reform Judaism temple in preparation for my Bat Mitzvah as a teen but it was primarily phonetic reading rather than grammar and vocabulary.

Description |
My primary interest is in Biblical Hebrew, but with an eye to also acquire an understanding of the differences of Modern Hebrew along the way. I am not an absolute beginner. I am familiar with the alphabet and vowel points, although I do not know the cursive alphabet. I understand the theory of the radical system of word formation. Beyond that it gets a bit fuzzy.
My interests in Biblical Hebrew are to be able to read and understand scholarly publications written about technical language points, and to be able to find my way through the Tanakh without constant reference to an English text. I am not looking for any ideological slant, just a lexical/lingu istic understanding .
I am a native speaker of English (American), but I have a strong command of Spanish (from school and college), Russian (from self-study and volunteer work with an immigrant population), and French (self-study and many trips to Quebec). I also studied linguistics while in college.
I am looking for a tutor who is experienced with teaching via distance learning. I can grasp grammar concepts well, but I have a bit of trouble implementing inflections and in building relevant vocabulary. I can commit about an hour a day or so to my personal study time. That would be in addition to contact time with my tutor. Unfotunately, I must be sensitive to cost, so I appreciate flexibility in that respect. In turn I offer flexibility in accommodating my tutor's schedule.
Thank you.
