I refuse to believe the saying "an old dog can't learn new tricks". Many believe that pronunciation cannot be achieved once you reach a certain age. I believe that repetition and muscle memory are able to overpower old habits. Much of the English pronunciation is based on tongue placement and usage while talking. Pronunciation is a big factor in being able to communicate. This is what I usually start my lessons with because in order to practice English, it is necessary to practice it properly. I believe that practicing something incorrectly only strengthens bad pronunciation habits.
Although I communicate in Japanese when needed to with my students, I strive to have my students engage in communication and try to make them think in English rather than their native language. I do everything I can to help my students reach their goals no matter what they may be. |
