I am looking for a small class to continue learning Mandarin. I studied for one year many years ago but would like to begin again and learn properly. I am looking for a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese to tutor me once a week for a couple of hours. I am currently in the military and must take an annual language test to prove my proficiency. In order to maintain my proficiency, I would like the lessons to be geared towards reading news and listening comprehension . My current proficiency level is advanced.

I studied Mandarin Chinese at U.W. from 1987-89, and learned grammar, reading, writing, pronunciation , and some conversation. Then I worked in China for two years teaching English, and my Chinese proficiency improved. My jobs were in universities in Shenyang and Chengdu. Many years passed before I was able to return. In 2002-03 I again taught English in China, this time in a primary school in Jinan. Much of my Chinese speaking ability came back, but my reading and writing abilities are now very limited.
It is my hope to return for a year of English teaching in China every few years. September 2005 is my next target date. Also I may have occasions to visit China on private business from time to time. I am a 56 year-old woman, and my ability to memorize has diminished, so it seems best for me to focus mainly on Chinese conversation practice. My speaking ability (pronunciatio n, grammar, and vocabulary) is better than my listening comprehension . For each lesson, I would like to have a conversation topic, spend some of the time discussing that, and the rest of the time learning sentence grammar and building my vocabulary. Each lesson should also have some review of previous lessons.
My schedule is very full, so it is only possible to plan 2 hours of lessons per week. This will be enough for me to continue active use of the language and improve gradually. I am seeking a teacher/tutor who is a native of Mainland China, preferably from the Northeast region. This person should have experience in teaching, skill assessment, and planning a course of language study for a student. The teacher does not need to be highly fluent in English. I live in West Seattle, and am willing to use my home for lessons or to travel to the teacher's home or another meeting place. I can pay $15-20/hour, depending on the teacher's experience.
