I'm a total beginner. The only Japanese I know are appliance and vehicle brand names. I however am a frustrated polyglot who now has the opportunity start down this learning path. Life circumstances dictated that I be a musician first, so I learned to play all instruments I can put my hands on. I then became a professional computer programmer and learned every computer language I came across, even the obscure ones. Other natural languages beyond the 3 I know seem the next sensible step to feed my passion for anything worth learning.
I can do up to 10 hours/week for the actual tutorial sessions. I would love to spend that with a teacher who I can, in music parlance, jam with (i.e, engage in conversations about everyday things and not gear me towards countless of memorizing vocabulary and sentence structures).

I am self taught, more than a beginner, but not very much. I would like to learn Japanese to help with my work, 20% of which is in Japan. I would like private lessons, but I have very little time because I am quite busy. A pair of weekday evenings (for example Tuesday and Thursday) about one week per month, for a total of 2 sessions / month is the most I could arrange. I have a pretty large noun vocabulary and a very good accent, but no grammar or conversation skill. Also, I know about 300 kanji but can only write a few from memory.
I have been working in Japan, off and on, for more than 15 years. I expect to continue doing so for another 15 years.
