I am an absolute beginner in Bengali, but I wish to be able to communicate at a reasonable level to friends and relatives of my boyfriend who is Bengali. We plan to travel to Bangladesh in about 7 months so I do not have that much time though I am willing to commit whatever time it may take to be able to speak at a reasonable level to native Bengali people.
