I am a 45 year old New Yorker with english as my only language. I have been married to an Indian woman from South Delhi for many years. We have 3 children and travel at least once a year to India. My in-laws often have extended stays in our home. Nearly everyone in my wife's immediate and extended family speaks english very well.
I also am a lawyer with many Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi,and Bangla speaking clients. I am embarassed that I don't speak Hindi better then I do and I am upset that my children have no fluency in the language.
I have no interest in written Hindi I only want to be able to speak the language in a way that makes me understood and allows me the freedom to speak competently and confidently.
At the moment I can speak pleasantries and follow very basic conversation. My vocabulary is small and I find that I rely on the english spoken by middle class indians, when they speak in hindi, to help me get by. I am interested in possibly having a teacher work with my children ages 14, 4 and 3 as well. Thank you.

I'd classify myself as a beginner. I had hindi lessons a couple of years ago, but hav'nt even retained the Devenagri script.
I plan to go to India next year and would like to learn Hindi to make that trip more enjoyable.
I learn best in a structured learning environment - I like to know the rules of what I am learning. I need a lot of repetition; information doesn't stay in my brain like it used to.
Realistic ally I could manage one lesson a week and it would have to be on a weekend.

I am currently a history undergrad who wishes to eventually study Indian History in grad school. Unfortunately , my university does not offer Hindi classes. I have already purchased a first level text, but I would like to meet with a tutor at least once a week this summer (2006)to help guide my progress. I am willing to pay $20/hr. Must be fluent.
