I want to learn Italian to prepare for my semester/s abroad in Italy beginning in the fall of 2011. I have never taken an Italian course before, however I am basically fluent in spanish which (I have heard) will be useful in learning Italian. I have never been taught a language by a tutor so I do not know how fast I will accelerate, therefore I'm not sure how much time I would need to dedicate. I want to have a basic grasp of conversationa l phrases and grammar, and I will continue to take classes once I arrive in Italy through the University there. I would like my tutor to be someone who is flexible with teaching methods, and can pick up on my strengths and weaknesses to devise an individual learning plan (that's why I am seeking a personal tutor instead of going to a classroom setting). I would prefer someone casual and easy going (like myself) because I learn much better in a relaxed atmosphere.

I kind of fell into learning Russian back in the 90's and circumstances have again allowed me to persue further fluency. I suppose other than to be able to use it in church, and with friends here, I hope to go on a mission trip to the Ukraine in the future.
I'm really not sure what my proficiency level is. My grammer stinks as I've never really had any 'professional ' instruction. It is a constant source of frustration for me. I'm rapidly coming to the point where I need to either get something like Rosetta Stone or go to a formal class, (other than the one I already attend). The other area which I am trying for all I'm worth to better myself at is comprehension when I'm being spoken to. Even when someone says something I should know, I either can't remember the words fast enough to keep up or don't understand the form of word being said as they change all the timee depending on useage!
I have a limited budget to allow for this, however I REALLY do want to become fluent, so I can be available often. I do however have a odd schedual that I would have to work around.
I would very much enjoy a class with other students where there is alot of talking, and creative learning and not so much emphasis on mundane reading of grammatical rules.
