My grandfather was from China. Though he was long dead when I was born, I am very keen to learn Mandarin. Totally beginner. What little Mandarin I know, I have learned by availing of the local library's Language CD, specifically, Pimsleur's.
The shortest time possible ... to enable me to make me Mandarin literate?

I am aiming to improve my Mandarin as I would very much like to do business in China, and also as I encounter a great number of Chinese speaking people in my city and while travelling.
I have taken up Adult level 4 at Langara College in Vancouver, but this was two years ago, so I am quite rusty.
My primary objective is to generate enough comfort to engage in verbal discussions with confidence and thereafter to improve my knowledge of characters.
A frequency of about one lesson per week to start would be ideal with the understanding that I will be doing work between classes to keep the momentum going.
In terms of teacher qualities, I am hoping to find someone who has the following:
A desire to make learning fun - likes to smile and enjoy teaching.
Mandarin as a first language.
A solid grasp of English to facilitate porting of ideas from English to Chinese, and vice versa.
Compl ete familiarity with pinyin.
Abil ity to teach outside of normal business hours.
An ability to design suitable lesson plans based on identified learning objectives.
The ability to provide/sourc e the tools and materials needed to maximize the value of the learning.
