I am a total beginner. I am going to China on business at the end of June and would like to be able to have a little understanding of the language and communicate some. I don't need to be fluent. I am looking for an evening class, once or twice a week. I think that in person instruction is more effective than other types of programs but will do homework and work with CDs as a supplement. I tried working with some CDs before I went to China 2 years ago but could not catch on. I have studied French, Italian and Spanish with success, but Chinese is so very different!

I am a mature age man who pursues an interest in Mandarin purely for personal development and an interest is Chinese culture. Some years ago I did a short course (six weeks) at Hua Dong Shi Da in Shanghai but have not studied for a couple of years. My level is basic, probably a few hundred characters, and apart from a recent visit to Beijing, have not practiced for a while. My intention, at this time, is to commence a twelve month period of renewed study at a moderate level of committment. One hour per week with a teacher and one hour per day private study.

I have no experience with Mandarin. I will be living in Shanghai next year for a study abroad program during which I am required to take language courses. Due to my major, I am also required to achieve a certain level of fluency in Mandarin. To expedite the process, I am hoping to begin lessons this summer prior to my departure. I am looking for a teacher who can be flexible with meeting times and who is willing to tailor lessons to my individual needs. I tend to pick up languages quickly but at times need reinforcement .

I have no clue about Chinese but want to learn it since my job in the next 4 years will require me to do so as we are moving our production to China. I want to be able to converse fluently and also be able to read Chinese to a certain extent. I would definitely prefer in-person teaching.
