I am a former militay linguist with a background in Spanish and Haitian Creole. I had some training in Modern Standard Arabic. I lived and worked in Somalia during the early 1980's, and worked as a cryptanalyst for one of those 3 letter government agencies in the Somali language. I seek to learn Somali in order to further my understanding of the culture and thought process of these unique people. I may decide to again work for the US government in attempting to stabilize this area. I look for lessons that will allow me to be able to converse and understand the nuances of the language. I am willing to dedicate 8+ hours per day to study. I want to learn to think ing he language, and m not really interested in translation. The other languages that I learned at the Defense Language Institute were taught in the manner that 'when you start to dream in it, you are beginning to really get it' That is what i am looking for.

I plan to move to either Spain or Portugal when I graduate in NY. I have absolutely no experience in Spanish or Portuguese. I want to be completely fluent in Portuguese and Spanish in the next 4 years. I'm willing to dedicate at least 10 hours a week. I'm hoping to find a Portuguese teacher who speaks Portuguese from Lisbon, Portugal. Also, I am looking for a Spanish teacher who speaks Spanish from Castilla, Spain.

My proficiency level is intermediate, I was raised in a home were Spanish was spoken occasionally, but was never taught to speak the language. So I guess I understande a lot more than I speak. I am learning spanish for two reasons. One, to help out my career. Two, to pass down my culture to my children one day, which is very important to me. I feel I need improvement in all areas of the language, in particular conversation. I am willing to dedicate a good chunk of my schedule in order to progress rapidly, as much as 3 times per week, it's something I've been putting off fot too long and I am motivated to begin the journey.
