| Description |
I am an Italian American (maternal grandparents from Sicily and paternal grandparents from Salerno)who wishes to learn Italian to better connect with my heritage. I am a beginner and have a dream of learning the language well enough to have social conversations as I visit Italy. I am most interested in private tutoring spending four hours a day 2 to 3 weeks. I will be in Italy from 11 September 2008 to 9 October 2008. An ideal tutor would be energetic, patient and with a great sense of humor and fun. I appreciate your interest. Barry De Gregorio

Mr. Liu Tao: ni hao! I just returned from staying a month in Shanghai. (I still have some jet-lag!) My son lives and works there. His wife and two little children (jie jie, and mei mei) also live, and go to school there. They have been studying the 'Putonghua' for over a year, and they know a lot, and in one year they will know much more! They have a non-English speaking 'Ayi'. They have bilingual friends. They will stay 5 years in 'Zhongguo'. I was fascinated with 'Zhongguo', its people (specially the 'nuren'!), the culture, the food ('shipin', baozi, jiaozi, guotie, and 'cha'), and the 'Putonghua'. I learned a few words and sentences,(do n't want to forget them) and want to be able to converse in Mandarin, and to order 'pijiu'. I am a beginner now, and want to dedicate as many as 4 hours a day to learn and study for the coming year. Why? Because I will go back to Shanghai in May next year, and want to be able to speak the language as much as possible. Also, I want to take classes while in Shanghai. For now I'm more interested in 'distance learning', and want to order your materials (books, CD's,etc). Could we have a personal interview?/Or maybe begin with a phone conversation? I bought (in Shanghai) the '15 minute Chinese' by DK, which I found very helpful (could be better!) but it has no CD. Upon returning home, I ordered the 'Mandarin Phrasebook' from 'lonely planet', which comes with a CD (will arrive soon), and now borrowed a Pimsler CD set from the library. However, I know I need a teacher. I have languages learning and studying experience, and hold University degrees; I am fully bilingual in Spanish/Engli sh; I know some French, Portuguese, and understand Italian; I also have studied both Ancient and Modern Hebrew, and some Ancient Greek, so I have the need, the motivation, discipline, desire, passion, experience, and dedication and time needed; also, the opportunity of traveling to Shanghai again in one year. And will not be surprised if I come back with a 'taitai'! I'll will learn Phutongguo one way or another! Also, I want to explore working as an English or Spanish teacher in Shanghai! Will you help me?

I have lived in Krungthep (Bangkok) Thailand for 1.5 years and was a Conversationa l English teacher while there.
I have some rudimentary Thai language skills (Thai nationals say I speak quite a bit, I tend to disagree - I know basic greetings, directions, numbers, etc. but cannot read or write in Thai characters, just in Romanization) .
Consider myself a beginner.
I want to learn from the ground up, the Thai alphabet first, proper phonics for each of the letters and the ability to read them...Would like to be able to speak, read and type in Thai - will work on writing on my own, once I get the alphabet down.
I plan on relocating back to Krungthep to start a business, but no date is set due to current (2010) economic situation in US and the rest of the world.
I currently work part time, third shift (11 PM to 7 AM) in Northern Illinois/Sout hern Wisconsin, but am off every other weekend and plan on being in Chicago at those time for face to face lessons...Oth erwise it would be online (chat, voice chat, video conferencing and/or telephone). Prefer male teacher as I have had difficulties getting my tones down with female instructors (their voice was too high for me :) but this is not a strict requirement.
I do have some experience with Rosetta Stone, but do not have it for the Thai language yet, will be purchasing it soon...Additi onally I have Pilmsleur Thai CDs and Thai For Beginners (by Benjawan Poomsan Becker) that I can use for reference...I have also created my own Thai alphabet primer (large letters with proper character stroke sequence for tracing and eventual freehand writing of the characters - like one in Pratom 1 or 2 might use).
