In 2009-10 I spent a year in China as a TESOL and IELTS English teacher, and I have returned several times since, primarily to visit ex students.
Du ring my time in the country I have 'acquired' some spoken phrases,I can count and read 'Entry' and 'Exit'. I also recognise 'Hangzhou', 'Shaoxing' and 'Shanghai' on buses. But basically I'm at the Hi Hao, Xia Xia stage.
I would like to learn more spoken language to make future visits even more enjoyable than previous ones. I also attend a weekly 'Experiencing China' programme which covers, history, culture, regions and current events in China, but not language.
