BACKGROUND
Ca ntonese is the fifth language I learn, but the first Asian (and tone) language. I have a musical background so I can usually copy accents and intonation quite easily, but Cantonese definitely presents new challenges!
LEVEL
I have been taking classes in a community center since October 2004 (2h/week) and I also study on my own with both the Pimsleur audio program and the Yale University Speak Cantonese audio-book program. I am already comfortable with the concept of tones and I learned both the Yale and Jyutping romanization (and about 50-60 characters!). I know basic grammar structures but only have a very limited vocabulary to practice them! I would need a tutor to force me (!!) to use the limited knowledge I have and help me drill it, expand it and increase it little by little.
REASON
A s Foreign Service Officer, learning new languages is always an asset. With already a few very useful languages, I could allow myself the fantasy of choosing a more 'exotic' target! So the main reasons that brought me to chose Cantonese are: 1) curiosity for a totally different linguistic system; 2) my boyfriend speaks Cantonese and now I am too shy to talk to him in Cantonese, but I am really eager to learn more as soon as possible to be able to speak to him and his family in their language!
OBJECTIVE
Wit h other languages like Spanish and Serbo-Croatia n, I could reach a level qualified as native, when people could not guess it is only a learned language. I know Asian languages are different and probably harder, so I am not aiming at perfection in accents or intonation, but I would definitely like to reach a level where I can unconsciously build complexe patterns, with a very extensive vocabulary. I am ready to work hard to reach that level within the next 2 years, i.e. by the end of 2006.
TEAC HER
I am looking for a tutor for short but intense private lessons, either one hour if in person in Ottawa, or 30 minutes if over the phone. We can exchange relevant material and information by email previous to the class.

I consider myself an intermediate learner of Italian. I have already participated in Italian language courses at my home town. By learning Italian I want to expand my knowledge of foreign languages and probably might use the language as a means to advance my career as a teacher. I am currently attending Algonquin College in the Paramedic program, and I think it would be very beneficial to improve my french. I am interested in conversationa l french, rather than grammar. I understand some french when people are speaking, however I can definately use improvement speaking and understanding the language. I would like to start lessons in May or June, and continue until I begin school again at the end of August.
