I am starting from a little above beginner. My wife and I lived in China for about 11 months.
We want to go back to China to live someday. We need Mandarin. I would like to be literate at about the grade three level in both writing and reading.
I think 1-4 hours a week plus homework is the range of time I can dedicate towards it.
I would like my Chinese tutor to give me a good language base so that I could follow and participate in everyday, but specific, Mandarin conversations . I would also like to read basic public signs.

I want to learn Mandarin Chinese, because I think it would be a good step to take. If I want to become a travel agents. I would be in the befinners group because I have no experience in speaking chinese. I would be able to dedicate 1 to 2 hours day everyday (doesn't have to be everyday though). I'm not looking really for any qualities in a teacher other then, 1. speaks english well enough to understand, 2. Is reliable.

I am looking for a teacher who can give me private lessons. I am currently working in the Prime Minister's Office of Canada and frequently meet with govt officials from Spanish speaking countries. I am also in the process of applying to phd programs in intl relations and would like to learn a third language for my future career plans. I would be willing to take lessons both Saturday and Sunday or perhaps one work day per week at night. I would especially like my teacher to be challenging and encourage active conversation as well as lessons (i.e. grammar homework etc)
