I would like to learn to speak Cantonese. I have no experience in the language, unfortunately . My boyfriend is Cantonese, and his parents speak little English. I would like to be able to communicate with them more fluidly. We are also going to Hong Kong in a few months to spend time with his family and I would like to be able to speak at least a little of the language. I am a little busy, but can squeeze in lessons on weeknights or weekends and between my boyfriend and his parents am actually surrounded by the language several times a week.

I am a beginner with no previous exposure.
I am visiting Hong Kong for 10 days in May 2008 and Xian for a few days after Hong Kong.
I need Cantonese for practical travel in Hong Kong, Macau, and the surrounding areas, that is, public transportatio n, restaurants, finding public restrooms, shopping, hotels, gardens and other situations.
I am retired presently except for a husband, 3 dogs and 3 cats. I will travel atleast twice before the Hong Kong trip. Otherwise I would like to devote 5 hours per day to studying Cantonese. I will practice in Cantonese restaurants and other recommended locals.
As for qualities in lessons or teachers... I am a 55 year old anglo female college instructor in accounting and management information systems who will be travelling apart from a group while in Hong Kong. I am interested in cultural insights appropriate for my demographic, e.g., etiquette. I think I am interested in learning to read and write Cantonese characters (Pinyon?) in order to read signs and menues. Generally I have difficulty understanding language (e.g., Spanish) and need extra help in listening and interpreting responses from others. I benefit from classroom interaction with an instructor and other students.
