I lived in Xiamen and Shanghai, China, for a year, but I worked within English-speak ing firms most of the time. So I have a very basic understanding of the language and yet liked to learn and (here's the important thing) USE what little Mandarin I would learn. I loved how the people would really appreciate my effort to speak their language, so now I want to learn how to engage a little more in everyday conversation. I’m not interested in a 'textbook' lesson in grammar or memorizing hundreds of vocabulary words that I won't use; rather, I’m more interested in being able to ask about the prices of products, talk about times, dates, transportatio n-related conversations . I am planning to return to China on a trip in 2006 and would like to have some ability to speak when I get there.

I am a complete beginner. I wish to learn Mandarin for fun as well as career advancement. I am hoping to meet a teacher with a reasonable rate that is willing to teach me from scratch. I am hoping to be able to travel and study with the teacher in person either during the fall or summer. Prior to that we can initially do some online work but that will be limited to one small session per week.
