I am a complete beginner having only learned a few phrases through books and a native speaker. I want to learn more for personal and future career purposes. My proficiency level in Mandarin would be classified as beginner. I have taken 3 years in high school (I'm now 24), but much of my knowledge has been forgotten. I want to learn Mandarin because my grandmother only speaks Mandarin, and I am of Chinese descent. I feel as though not knowing Chinese has stunted my experience in connecting with my roots. Also, in my future career as a physician, I would like to be able to communicate with chinese patients in their native language.
The areas in which I need improvement would be vocabulary, conversation, and a little bit of grammar. I would like to start the lessons twice a week, within the next week, for at least a few months.
On e of the most important features I am looking for in a teacher would probably be flexibility in schedule, as my own schedule will be scattered after May, 2009.
