I am a 60 year old English sociologist recently moved to Colombia to live and work with my Colombian wife. To live here at all successfully obviously requires me to learn Spanish. I have been trying to do so on and off for several years, not successfully. I started with a few private lessons which at first were quite productive. Later I tried a language class in my home university in the UK; I abandoned it due to the poor quality of the teaching. Most recently, I tried a similar class at a university here in Bogotá, and again gave it up for the same reason. Though my reading skills and vocabulary are improving slowly, all my other abilities in the language remain poor. I cannot understand a conversationa l word, nor can I make myself understood.
More than just a language teacher, I need a therapist! My attitude to learning Spanish is very bad: I do not enjoy the process! Any trivial encounter (such as ordering a coffee in a café) leaves me angry and depressed, when it goes wrong as it usually does. This situation is getting worse not better. I have less and less confidence.
In a teacher, I would be looking for someone with patience and intelligence. I do NOT want 'immersion' or lessons 'solo en español'. I want/need to DISCUSS aspects of the language that are sociologicall y interesting (such as its sexism, and its formality) and this discussion (at least at first) will have to be in English. I do not want to be treated as a child or an idiot. And the Spanish that I am taught should be locally appropriate.
Does such a paragon exist? Is anybody willing to take me on? If you understand my requirements, and are sympathetic with them, then please get in touch. I am willing and able to spend some several hours a week.
