I am somewhere between a beginner's level and an intermediate level in spoken Japanese. I have only learned Hiragana for writing, however. I would like to become conversationa lly fluent in Japanese. I have learned a few other languages, including Spanish, French, Esperanto, and Lithuanian.
I would love a Japanese teacher in or near Chicago, and I would love just as much a 'virtual' Japanese instructor for lessons in video/voice conferences online.

I am contacting you concerning my son, David. We recently returned from a 2 wk vacation in Japan and he is very interested in learning the language. His father is interested also, but I would prefer to concentrate on lessons for David at the moment. I don't believe my husband will have the time to give the language his full attention. My son is 4th generation Japanese/Amer ican. His father was not taught Japanese in the home so our son feels that he wants to regain his rightful language. He is currently taking Spanish and Hebrew language classes. Will that cause a problem? David is a freshman in High School and would like to speak and write Japanese. He would be a beginner. I am a beginner with almost zero experience in Japanese. I want to learn Japanese because I have a great interest in Japanese language and culture, but have not been able to get far on my own. I hope to visit Japan in the future, and it would be better if I knew some of the language. I am a serious student, and already take French in my high school. I am really very flexible about time. I studied Japanese for 5 years in college but have not used it since and forgot everything. I plan to take the Japanese proficiency test a year or two from now and go to Japan as an English language teacher or find some other job there. I need a fairly unique approach because of my past experience with Japanese. I am also a professional conference interpreter and learn foreign languages easily, so I will be doing most of the work myself. I am looking for a tutor for one or two times a week for an extended period of time. I would like to concentrate on the modern language: movies, news, magazines, etc. Because my goal is to find a job in Japan, I need to know both the spoken language and Kanji.
