Hello,
My name is Krista and I'm a full-time college student working part-time in Sacramento. I really would like to accelerate learning Hindi and to learn from someone who has time to teach me in a classroom setting.
My boyfriend is from Gujarat and I would love to be able to speak Hindi with him and his family. It's really important for me to become fluent because it is so important to his parents that his culture and lifestyle remain a large part of his life. By learning to speak Hindi I can in some ways assure his parents how important his culture is to me and that I want to make it an important part of our life together too!
At this point I am a complete beginner and we would need to start out with the basics in every area. I would like to work with the teacher once a week for maybe an hour or two.
I hope that my teacher will have actual classroom experience in teaching the subject and working with english-speak ing students.

Why I am learning Hindi:
I just finished my BA in Linguistics from the University of Oregon. I am currently taking 1-2 years off before going back to school to get a PhD in either Linguistics or Cultural Anthropology. My area of interest is South Asia, and in order to complete my PhD I need to learn Hindi to access the field for research. In addition, I have been dating a man from Fiji, and his whole family speaks Hindi almost exclusively in the home. It is becoming more and more important for me to learn Hindi so I can be more of a part of the family.
Pr oficiency & Areas of Improvement:
I am just a beginner. I know only a few Hindi words. I want to be proficient in conversation, reading and writing of Hindi. I am also very much interested in grammar. I need to be conversant enough that I can negotiate meaning with native Hindi speakers once I arrive in India.
Tim e to dedicate:
I am used to spending at least 3 days a week in class when learning a language. I am very serious about this, and I have plenty of opportunity to practice at home. I tend to push myself very hard.
At present I am not taking any other classes, but I to plan to begin studying for the GRE this year, as well. I work about 30 hours a week, but my hours are very flexible.
Qualities I am looking for in a teacher:
I want a native Hindi speaker, preferably from India, since that is where I intend to do my field research. I am looking for someone who can teach me language and culture together.

I am currently enrolled in a beginner's Hindi course. It is possible that I may work in India in the future.
My grandparents spoke a Hindi dialect, however the younger generation of my family were discouraged from learning Hindi because of negative associations. That concept has now changed.
I can dedicate 7-10 hours a week on Hindi homework preparation in addition to 1-2 hours of teacher-stude nt discourse.
As a beginner, I am as a young child learning to speak and learn the alphabet. I'd like to find a teacher who is patient, observes mutual respect and can create an individualize d learning plan. My goal is to be fluent in speaking, writing and reading Hindi by 2011-2012.
