My son is 14 and is at school in the UK. He is studying for the IGCSE exam which he will take in June 2012. Prior to boarding school in the UK he was at school in Australia so he is dealing with changes in the course and the level. On the whole he is managing at the level required but he lacks confidence and would like to improve in order to get a good grade. We can provide textbooks and there is an online website showing the syllabus. The course covers both written and oral work.
He will be in the USA for the UK Easter break from 4th to 24th April. We would like to organise lessons for this period and if they prove helpful we would then like more during future breaks until the exam. I think probably 2 hours twice a week but we are flexible. We live in Bryn Mawr.

I am a mother of a daughter who at about 4 years old(she is now 6) started a love of all things french. I am looking at enrolling her in french immersion school and therefore would like to learn french myself. I have a great appreciation of all languages and cultures, though no experience learning french other than a strong desire to learn. I would like to have a native instructor who is patient and would not mind possibly tutoring my daughter as well. I would like my/our instructor to help us determine the level of dedication that would suit our language goals.

Bonjour,
J' étudiais le français pendant 9 ans, au lycée et á l'université. J'ai fine mes études depuis plus de trois ans, et il n'y a pas beaucoup de personne avec qui je peux pratiquer. Je peux lire et écrire assez bien, mais je voudrais parler meilleur et entendre meilleur, surtout pour améliorer ma grammaire en conversation.
I know that private lessons are often expensive, but I'm afraid I can't afraid to pay very much right now. However, since I have had a lot of difficulty finding local colleges and universities that offer advanced French courses, perhaps we can work something out where I can pay your regular amount, but with fewer classes. Ideally I would like to meet once a week, but if price is an issue, then perhaps once or twice a month would suffice.
I would love to be able to say that I am fluent on my resume, because I would like to work international ly. However, at present, I need practice speaking more than anything.
Learning by immersion would be welcome at this point. Throughout high school and college, I was surrounded by students who would convince the teacher to speak in English so that they could understand better. However, this has limited my ability to listen during a conversation.
