I have begun a realtionship with a woman in Serbia. I have visited and although she and most of her family speak perfect English, I would very much like to be able to communicate, even on a basic level, in her native language. I want to show her the respect I have for her and the committment I have to her.
I am a total beginner with only a few words
I have already begun studying a book on Serbo Croat and will look to see if I can purchase a CD course. However, a weekly lesson with a native speaker would be invaluable to ask questions of and to practice
I would want a teacher who was willing to be flexible in how they teach. So as well as following their own lesson structure would allow time for me to ask 'How would I say this', or 'How can I convey this feeling' etc. Also one who understands the culture of Serbia, so they could help me learn more of the mind set of the nation, which is vital in true communication .

My mother and grandparents are Serbian, and as a child I was quite proficient in the language but ever since I began school it has increasingly deteriorated.
I've gotten to the point where even in the simplest sentence I'll have to use at least 1 English word, and I totally avoid speaking Serb to anyone outside my family.
I think my proficiency at the moment is only marginally above beginner.
I love the language, I even taught myself Cyrillic but the language we speak at home isn't proper Serbian.
I can't really learn from my family for a number of reasons:
- my father isn't Serbian so English is spoken at home (and my brother can't speak it either)
- I learnt most of my Serbian from my Baba and she only completed school to year 10 and has been in Australia for 30+ years so even she isn't 100% fluent anymore. And neither is anyone else, my mum and aunt were children when they immigrated.
- Because I didn't see my Deda much when I was younger, and mostly heard my Mum, Tetka and Baba speaking - when I refer to things the gender is mixed up. I only found out Serbian had 'gender' terms when I was about 12 (much to my dismay) which leads me to my next point,
- They (my family) didn't correct many of my childhood mistakes because they thought it sounded cute, the way I spoke. So I've got bad speaking habbits. Eg) until very recently I used to say 'Ja sam zima' to say, 'I'm cold' when I should be saying, 'Hladan mi je'
At the moment because I'm studying at uni I could only commit to 1-2 classes a week.
I'm looking for someone who will point out where I'm tripping up in grammar, gender etc, improve my vocab and build up my proficiency.
