I have always wanted to learn Sign Language, especially since I grew up visiting my Great Aunt who was deaf. I also was a student aide for the special education class in high school and I always wished I could have communicated with the students who are deaf. It has always been a goal of mine to learn sign language so I can communicate with the deaf community as well as possibly using it in a career.

I am learning Mandarin, because I would like to take an opportunity to work in Shanghai for two years starting Summer 2012. My primary goals are to practice pronunciation and listening, refresh myself on the grammar and vocabulary lessons I learned in college, and take my proficiency to a level beyond what I attained in college.
I studied Mandarin for four semesters (18 hours) at the University of Texas at Austin. I graduated in May of 2010. I consider myself a rusty intermediate speaker.
M y most urgent need is to perfect my conversation skills. I need to prepare for an all-Chinese interview with our Chinese director. This interview will take place in January 2012. However, I am also interested in improving my understanding of Chinese, generally.
I wish to devote at least one hour per week to in-person language lessons. Outside of lessons, I am prepared to dedicate whatever it takes to keep up.
I work best with teachers who expect clear goals to be met each week. When I leave a lesson, I like to know what I should learn throughout the rest of the week and what I should be able to do at the next lesson.

I am currently enrolled in Russian 1 for college. I have wanted to learn Russian for many years and now I am finally able to do so, but in the first week of class I am already seeing that I will have trouble. Since my classes are online my Russian course is a mixture of the Rosetta Stone program and assignments given by my professor. The Rosetta Stone program so far does not seem like an effective way to learn to speak the language, I can hear and understand fairly well, but to learn the correct pronunciation of the words is extreemly difficult.
