My son and daughter in law have recently moved to Hong Kong and my husband and I intend visiting them 2-3 times a year. Obviously it would be a great advantage to be able to speak the language, and so I am hoping to learn conversationa l Cantonese, with at least 2 lessons per week in the initial stages.
At present I can only count 1-10 in Cantonese and so I am very much a beginner! I have however studied other languages, (although none of them Asian) and so while I have a bit of an aptitude for language, I know that Asian languages and tones are very different from European languages. But I am looking forward to the challenge!

Hi
I wish to learn Cantonese to a colloquial, conversationa l level to enable me to effectively communicate with, and get to know better, my girlfriend's parents and family. Their English is very good but they are more comfortable speaking Cantonese.
I have learnt a few words and phrases, and for a little while felt like I was making progress, but learning a language by oneself has been extremely difficult and I am losing motivation.
My time is severely limited by my work so ideally I would like to have lesson(s) on weekends, preferably somewhere near Mount Gravatt. I am unsure how much time is needed to devote to this study but I could manage an hour or two a week with self-study in between.
I'm looking for a teacher who is patient and will help me deal with my Australian accent and difficulty with getting the different Cantonese inflections right.
