I am interested in learning sign language because.. i have a niece that was diagnosed with down syndrome a few years ago and her main from of communication in sign language. It has truly inspired me to learn and to be able to understand her more would be amazing. Im thinking about studying childhood development in kids with disabilities. I understand very little at the moment. I know the alphabet.. and simple things that my niece has taught me. I would like to have two classes a week.. maybe 1.5-2 hours long. In a teacher I'm looking for someone that will go slow and really make me understand.. and someone thats going to challenge me and really give me what i need to take this to the place I want it to go.

Dear potential teacher,
I am currently in the military and have about 3 years left, however when I get out of the military I plan on finishing college and hopefully persuing a career in special education. I have had the opportunity to work with some children with Down Syndrome, and would love to continue working in special education. I may not always need to know sign language to communicate to the children, however I am very interested in learning to communicate this way and I'm sure it will be helpful. I will get a book and start to teach myself but I would really love to work with a teacher one on one or in a class. My schedule is very difficult though, sometimes long hours. So I was hoping to find a tutor with a flexible schedule. I also dont have very much time left in San Diego because my ship is changing home ports to Japan in June 2007, so if you could help me out in any way or know anyone that could it would be greatly appreciated. The sooner I start the better off I will be in the future. I have a true desire to work with these children because we really have so much to learn from them. I will learn sign language sometime whether it is now or when I leave the military, but I would love to start now. Thank you for your time and I hope to hear from you soon.
