Description |
I am at beginner level but I have a proficency of basic words and the alphabet. I would like to work in the deaf and hard of hearing education field and am planning on taking it up in graduate school but would like to start learning the language now. I need most help with having a conversation. I would like to have lessons weekly. I would prefer a tutor because I will be taking classes in graduate school.

Description |
1. I know the alphabet and have a vocabulary of approximately 25 words. I have the book, 'A Basic Corse in ASL by Tom Humphries, Carol Padden and Terrence J. O'Rourke ill ustrated by Frank A. Paul. 2. I have a handicapped child and even though he cannot learn sign language my journey with him has taken me into numerous situations where I witnessed the need for interpreting and a tug in my heart to pursue it. Since I am also a visual artist and have some video and television production experience I see how all these skills could come together quite nicely, I also view it as a career goal to suit the lifestyle of mother w/ a special needs child. I see possibil ities for something other than a 9-5 job. 3. I need to progress. I took a beginner course and now need to follow through; my fingerspellli ng is still slow but I believe that my grammar and handforming of signs is good as I have large hands for a woman. At the school that I took the beginners course I was also told by others that I had perfect hands for signing. 4. The time I wish to devote to signing would unfortunately depend on the cost for classes/tutor ing. 5. I am looking for a teacher who will teach strong ASL and help me be as fluid as possible. I am also looking for a teacher who is patient but not lax in assignments. I believe that my teacher should be knowledgeable about deaf culture as well as signing. I would hope that lessons would include grammar, proper forming, strong ASL signing structure of 'sentences' and any related history or variations.
