Teaching Approach

Being myself a student of four+ foreign languages for most of my life, I am well aware of possible individual characteristi cs of a learner both from self-reflecti on on my own experience and analysis of my classmates. Now performing a role of a language instructor, I consider my learning experience to be my main advantage. In my opinion, there are no people with no gift to master a language; no matter their learning background, age or memory, success of the learning process depends a lot on the teacher’s attitude and ability to address differences turning them into advantages. From personal experience I know that this everyday challenge can be solved through the introduction of a combination of various activities (aimed at developing different skills) and learning materials (correspondin g to visual, audial, kinesthetic types of learners). While focusing on development of different skills, this combination addresses at the same time each person’s needs and peculiarities . Other important aspects that help overcome difficulties connected with diverse classrooms are teacher’s flexibility, positive attitude and creativity. Placing students in the centre of the learning process, I still believe it does not eliminate the importance of teacher’s role, who should perform the whole range of functions, from organizing and controlling the lesson to participating in activities together with the students. In my classes, I try to establish trustful and cooperative relationships between students and myself, which, in my opinion, helps create a positive learning atmosphere and motivation. I think in a friendly setting, not only the learning process is more successful but also assessing students` accomplishmen ts will not be treated as a critique. On the contrary, it may be turned into additional stimulus for self-improvem ent. Along with regular tests aimed at controlling the learning process and revealing the possible weaknesses, I also introduce peer review, which helps to establish cooperative and collaborative relationships among the students.

Program Description
I see my main goal in enabling undergraduate students to perform a successful communication in a variety of forms (speaking on the phone, writing a resume or simply listening to the radio in the foreign language) and feel comfortable in a target language community. In this respect, my teaching philosophy is based on communicative language approach along with the focus on the target culture. I also consider involving students into the meaning-focus communicative tasks aimed at development of all four language skills (writing, speaking, listening, reading) to be essential in the language learning process. The basis of my methodology constitute the following practical realization of CLT: providing the students with a variety of practice in possible real-life situations using simulations and role-plays, different ways of class organizations (individual work, pair-work etc.); their exposure to a variety of authentic materials (national music, cartoons, poetry, newspaper articles) which constitute an inseparable part of any language culture. Another important aspect of language teaching I find necessary is introduction into language classes various computer based programmes and digital devices which facilitate learning process and extend students` exposure to the target language. Besides, using modern technologies allows learners organize their studying time and process based on their schedule, pace of learning and personal preferences, which answers my aim to address individual needs and characteristi cs of each student individually. Though I am a true believer in effectiveness of CLT, I also think that the focus on communication should be combined with the development of grammar knowledge which contributes to conceptual understanding and cognitive skills. To reach this goal, in my classes, I combine explanations and grammar aspects analysis with practising theoretical knowledge in concrete exercises to reach not only fluency but also accuracy in both written and spoken speech.
