My teaching approach adopts the communicative approach and utilizes the 4 skills model to focus on reading, writing, speaking and listening and is student-cente red with interaction with students and developing linguistic proficiency as the principle goal. In addition to emphasizing mechanical and grammatical mastery, I focus on aiding students in developing the cultural competency skills necessary to truly immerse themselves in the culture of the language. My lessons are unique in that they are rooted in my experience as both a trained linguist and also a world traveller thanks to my time spent abroad as a teacher in Russia and Kazakhstan. Students with me will learn not only the language but how to comfortably and effectively navigate the countries and cultures for the languages they wish to learn.

I hold a M.A in Slavic Linguistics from the University of Chicago and a B.A in Linguistics from the University of Arizona and certificates in language proficiency in German from the University of Leipzig in Germany and in Mandarin Chinese from Renmin University of China in Beijing. I have conduced research on Russian and a number of the minority languages of the former Soviet Union including Chechen, Kazakh, Kirgiz and Uzbek. In addition to these languages I also have studied and taught German at the University of Arizona and at Intellect Language School in Almaty, Kazakhstan. I have also received funding from Title VI for the study of Turkish and standard Russian. Finally, I am also able to tutor and teach Mandarin Chinese, Serbo-Croatia n, Turkish and Iranian Persian.
