Incredibly, scholars have found a way to teach an adult a second language without the time-consumin g and tedious memorizing of grammar rules and vocabulary. My first contact with the method I use to teach was as a student in England, then later as an instructor. My course is one-on-one interactive, so you start speaking in the first minutes of your first lesson. The concept is simple; teach you to speak a second language the same way you learned to speak your native language e.g., first hear and understand, repeat (speak), read and eventually write. I would say that 2 hours per week is the minimum if you really want to be fluent. In some programs they use the word "fast track", but I don't like that word. It makes the huge task of learning another language sound like you should be able to do it quickly, and it's proven that if you try to learn too fast, you will just as quickly forget! My approach is based on the student's level of proficiency, interests and aptitude to get involved an talking. I always start with the very basics. Phonetics of the POrtuguese language is my very first lesson. From there, I move on to greetings and other minor topics of conversartion s. I do an exposition of Grammar every other week. Vocabulary, reading and speaking are always key elements to every class. Even if I am explaining grammar, I try to encourage the student to participate by making up sentences or repeting after me. My approach is very simple but yet very effective. |
