  • Teaching approach: Fluent Latin Speaker and Latin Textbook Author!

I teach Latin, Ancient Greek, Spanish, and English. My approach to teaching all languages is essentially the same, a dual focus on grammar and conversation. The awful truth is that most students who study a language never end up learning it because of poor curriculum and/or teaching. Most ancient language curriculum (Latin, Ancient Greek, etc.) neglects conversation, while most modern language curriculum (Spanish, English, French, etc.) fails to teach the student the basic structure and logic of the language. If a student wishes to gain advanced competence (and enjoy the journey!), then both aspects must be included.

I am the founder and owner of my own Latin tutoring company, which employs a small group of elite Latin tutors and follows three distinct Latin courses for students of various ages. Five years ago I wrote a full-color illustrated Conversationa l Latin textbook along with more than 100 full-color Grammar and Vocabulary R...

  • Teaching approach: I have been trying to find something that is so simple that it makes my students say, “Yep, it’s so easy!”
I wish I could keep my students loyal, I could educate them, satisfy their needs, stand behind my words, and make that I do everything I say I'm going to do. I try to convey not only an understanding of the language but also an enthusiasm for it, and an interest in the rich study of culture.

  • Teaching approach: My teaching approach for both Latin and Greek is in realm of a systematic visual paradigm approach, helping students to focus on the norm and the constants, so that the variables that exist in any language are not as burdensome. I offer excellent study methodologies that a disciplined student may readily acquire, including a foolproof method for studying and memorizing vocabulary.

  • Teaching approach: Unlike a lot of teachers of dead languages, I like to emphasize conversation and active use. Besides being much more fun than just reading texts, all evidence points to conversation being the best way to learn a language. Generally speaking, I like to spend 1/3 of the class in conversation, 1/3 in introducing and practicing grammar, and 1/3 in reading texts. No matter how much we're covering in a day--and expect to do a lot of work!--the mood is always fun. Many students have told me they look forward to my class after a long day at work or their usual school, and I know I always have a great time. So if you want actually want to learn a dead a language and have fun doing it, send me a message!

  • Teaching approach: If you would like to begin learning Latin from scratch, for students of any age I use the Cambridge Latin books, which you will need to buy (Unit 1, for example, which would be a school year's worth of work for a middle school student or a semester for an older student, is $28 on amazon, and the workbook is $16.). If you are already in a course and want tutoring, I will work with whatever system you are using. I prefer Cambridge, especially for younger learners, for its reading-based and culture-rich approach. Motivated adult learners might prefer Latin for the New Millennium, a more grammar-drive n and very authentic approach. We will decide together the best course for you or your younger learner.

  • Teaching approach: I work with each student as an individual, establishing rapport and understanding of his or her pacing needs, special interests, etc. My students of all ages and levels have consistently expressed gratitude for my respect toward them, my contagious enthusiasm for and deep knowledge of my subject matter, and the enjoyment they experience during lessons. Also a professional writer, I am particularly devoted to the way that understanding Latin grammar, usage and expression can affect reading and writing in English. Along with a bachelor's degree in Classics (Latin and ancient Greek) from a prestigious U.S. college, I hold a master's degree in literacy education.

  • Teaching approach: For Latin, I mainly focus teaching with the goal of reading it. I focus on learning Latin to help expand one's English vocabulary as well as learning to enjoy reading the literature written in its original language. However, the student(s) will also learn the mythology, history, and culture of the ancient Romans.
Fren ch will be taught in a more conversationa l manner.
