Uses of POR and PARA:

These two prepositions are extremely important in Spanish. Unfortunately, their use is a bit cumbersome.
Their two most common meanings are: FOR and BY. However, under certain circumstances, they also mean: around, through, via and others... Also, there are many idiomatic expressions that use these prepositions (especially 'por'): por favor, por lo tento, por supuesto, etc.

What you will see next, are some sentences in which the proper preposition has been already selected.

1. David lives by the park.
    David vive POR el parque.

2. Colombia is famous for its coffee.
    Colombia es famoso POR su café.

3. These flowers are for my mother.
    Estas flores son PARA mi madre.

4. We were in México for two weeks.
    Estuvimos en México POR dos semanas.

5. I need a good teacher to learn Spanish.
     Necesito un buen profesor PARA aprender español.

Try these yourself:

1. I lived in Toronto for 3 years.
     Yo viví en Toronto

tres años.

2. Cesar's house is around Dixie Road.
La casa de César es

la calle Dixie.

3. The lemonade is for everybody.
La limonada es

todos.
