Verbs and singular plural applications -Special cases A collective noun is followed by a singular verb because the group together act as a single unit
.ie- The flock of birds flies north every summer
My class has seen this game
A colective noun can be plural when members of a group are acting as seperate persons/unit
i.e The team are unable to make up their minds (The individual members of the team are not acting together)
Compound subjects are plural when they are joined by ....and.....
i.e The Duck and goose are splashing
Food items are considered as one dish - peanut butter and jelly/macoroni and cheese is my favourite food
Verbs with compound subjects joined by ....or...
Either my dog or I am responsible
Either she or her dog is responsible
Either you or your dogs are responsible

Indefinite pronouns -singular plural interpretation
Singular - another/everybody/ no one/anybody/everyone/nothing/anyone/everything/one/anything/much/somebody/each/neither//someone/either/nobody/something.
Plural - both/few/many/others/several
either singular or plural according to their reference to the nouns or pronouns
all his allowance was spent
all his clothes were in the junk |
