How to tell time in Russian

Exact time
one o'clockодин час
two o'clockдва часа
three o'clockтри часа
four o'clockчетыре часа
five o'clockпять часов
six o'clockшесть часов
seven o'clockсемь часов
eight o'clockвосемь часов
nine o'clockдевять часов
ten o'clockдесять часов
eleven o'clockодиннадцать часов
twelve o'clockдвенадцать часов

Note. To tell exact time you also can add the word ровно. Here is how: два часа ровно. This word is optional.

When there remains less than half an hour till the beginning of a certain hour
ten to threeбез десяти три
quarter to threeбез четверти три or без пятнадцати три
twenty to threeбез двадцати три
half past twoполовина третьего or полтретьего

Note. Sometimes you can hear enlarged construction like Feel free to ignore added word as минут because the most important thing here is a numeral - try to catch that and it will be enough fro understanding.

When there passed less than half an hour since the beginning of a new hour
quarter past twoчетверть третьего or пятнадцать минут третьего
half past twoполовина третьего or полтретьего

Note. Полтретьего: the simplest and most common form, I recommend it to remember. It is easy, short and it makes you understood any way. The construction is built from половина +  any ordinal numeral.

Note. 3AM is as night time for some people as morning time to the other, so you can tell both ways. Usually, a person who starts his day too early, like at 3AM-5AM, is called жаворонок (morning lark or morning bird), and the person who does opposite is called сова (night owl).

Using the short phrase you better be sure that your partner understands the context. You can “Я завтракаю в одиннадцать часов” (“I have a breakfast at eleven o’clock”) as it is clear you are talking about morning. Nevertheless if your friend is out of context, you should use one of these words: утра, дня, вечера or ночи.
