The word vacation and holiday are often used to mean the same thing. However, the word vacation generally refers to rest or leisure time away from your workplace. You can vacation at home or travel somewhere else to rest.
Holiday refers to rare opportunity for travel and is usually taken during a special occasion. It is generally a time away from all work. The special occasion can be a national period of celebration, religious period of celebration, or a special time of the year such as winter or summer.
During a “vacation” you could plan to stay home and paint your home. However; during a “holiday” you would most likely travel to see friends and family but you would never stay home and work.
So, if you are going away to see friends to celebrate you can use either the word “vacation” or the word “holiday.” However, if you plan to take some time off of work and stay home to paint your house you would not use the word holiday.
The bottom line is this: You would never work on a holiday but you could work on a vacation

Not esmoke. You don't just add the letter e to english words to turn them into spanish.

A vacation can be when you have time off of work or school, it is also used in exchange for traveling. Usually when people say they are going on vacation means they are traveling somewhere.
Example:
I went on vacation to Hawaii.
A holiday is a celebration day such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, Independence Day, Valentines Day. I can see how the words couldbe mixed up because a lot of times people go on vacations during holidays :)
Example:
I am going on a vacation to Europe over the holidays.
