Description |
I was born in the Philippines but moved to the US when I was three, so I guess my comfort level with the spoken language is at the three year-old level (ha!). I understand Tagalog pretty well in basic conversations , but even listening to it on TV can be very challenging.
My parents retired back to my birthplace, Baguio City, a few years ago. I have been visiting regularly ever since. I usually stay for three to six weeks, so I would like to take advantage of my extended stays by taking Tagalog lessons so that I can be comfortable in conversations with the locals.
I do my best to use the language, but I know my grammar is poor, and I can't really converse in complete or complex sentences...j ust a few words or common phrases. My priority is gaining more confidence in my conversation skills and speaking with a good accent.
My lesson time depends on my stay in the Philippines. If it is for several weeks, I'd like to get in as many lessons as possible, maybe 2-3 each week.
I have lots of cousins to practice with, but I need a teacher who can explain it also on a semi-formal level. I have experience in studying other foreign languages(Fre nch, German, and Portuguese) so similar approaches may also be helpful, as well as more intuitive approaches through conversation. I'd like the teacher to be outgoing and fun, but patient, prepared, and knowledgeable . The teacher should demonstrate a solid methodical approach, with good resources and exercises, so that I can continue my studies independently when I'm in the States.

My proficiency level in tagalog is begginer. I have purchased two books to study tagalog and a dictionary, but I am having a hard time with the verbs and tenses. I'm learning Tagalog primarily because I love to learn other languages, but my wife is a filipina and speaks tagalog. She works full time and doesn't have much time to teach me the rules and concepts of the tagalog language. I learn how to pronunciate and have aquired a decent amount of vocabulary, but still feel like I'm not going anywhere. I would like to speak and teach tagalog to my children, I think it is better for them now to learn while they are young. I have subscribed to the TLC and am watching tagalog movies. I know to learn a language the most efficient way is to submerge yourself in the culture and the language where your are forced to speak and listen, but this is dificult to do because my wife is not a patient teacher, though she tries. It is much easier to speak english. I'm willing to commit 3-5 hours a week, if it is possible with the instructor. Some of the things I am looking for is a instructor with some experience teaching adults and is easy to get along with, I'm not a slow learner but I will require some patience. Also, an instructor who is native to the Phillipines and the culture, and give overall well-rounded lessons. I look forward to progressing in my skills with my new instructor and the experience of a new freind. Than k You

Description |
I am currently a 3 rd year medical student at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila and highly interested in hiring a tagalog tutor. I barely understand tagalog conversations and I know enough tagalog to get me through traveling in taxis in Manila. Last school year, we started taking histories of patients' in the hospital. I had an extremely difficult time in performing this task due to my limitations with the Tagalog language; hence the need for a tutor. I would like to find a tutor in the Los Angeles/Orang e/Riverside areas, consisting of a 3 day a week schedule, with maybe 2-3 hours instruction. The program would have to be tailored somewhat specific to tagalog I would need in working with tagalog speaking patients and accelerated in a 1-1 1/2 month program since I will be going back to the Philippines on June 8, 2007. Flexibility is an important quality I am looking for in a teacher.
