I lived in Cairo for a little over 4 years and have basic conversation level (ie can get around in a taxi, buy groceries, chat using basic phrases etc). I get very nervous when face to face speaking but understand more than I can speak. I would like to know more so I can communicate easier when I visit friends there. I also know a little of the alphabet but not how to read and write other than my name and a few basic words since the written is often different word than the spoken. I could only take class in the evening after 6 and no more than a couple nights a week at most. I need a teacher who is very gentle and patient since I am already nervous...
Also my daughter does some translation for co-workers and would be interested in expanding her vocabulary for the workplace as well as learn to read and write (same level in this as me). Thank you for your response!

My wife and I are adopting a child from Taiwan later this year or next year (2008 or 2009). We would like to have some basic skills in Mandarin before travelling to Taiwan to finalize the adoption. We are interested in both speaking skills and reading/writi ng skills (reading is more important than writing).
She took some courses in Chinese in college, but is still beginner (or a little better). I am definitely at beginner level.

I want to learn to speak spanish because I'm a trainer for the company I work for, and would like the opportunity to be able to communicate with the spanish speaking students who attend my classes. I took spanish classes about 10 years ago, so I believe I'm in the beginner category. My focus needs to be on conversation. I can dedicate about 5 hours per week to this personal goal. The qualities I'm looking for in a teacher are someone who is patient, able to adapt to my learning style, flexible, reasonably priced, able to provide documenation so I can be reembursed thru my company for the classes, and dedicated to helping me reach my goal of learning to speak spanish.
