Description |
I have started study of Vietnamese on my on about a month ago, and over the summer I would like to have sessions once or twice a week to to build upon the study I do daily on my own. With a tutor I would particularly like to focus on speaking and understanding spoken Vietnamese. Preferably I would like to focus on the Hanoi dialect. Over the summer, I will be able to spend 1 to 2 hours per day working on Vietnamese. I am learning Vietnamese primarily to learn about the culture and eventually to be able to read the literature. In a teacher I would want someone with a good ability to explain why things are said the way they are and to point out the rules or patterns that will help me make natural-sound ing sentences. I also want to focus on the meat of the language, and plan to make the very most out of the sessions as possible.

I have an opportunity to do installation/ start-up/troub le-shooting work for a company that does considerable work in Latin and South America. I am currently on such an assignment and find that my inability to communicate with the local people directly is a detriment to my effectiveness for a host of reasons. I need to be able to understand and make myself understood to the people I meet. Also, in Houston, I am experiencing similar issues with Latin Americans there. My wife and I would like to become conversationa lly competent in Spanish and as quickly as possible since I have the opportunity to come back to Chile in August for a 2-4 month assignment. What is your recommended approach to fill our needs? Consi der us truly, non-Spanish speaking at this point. I don't know how much time I am willing to dedicate to this; as much as it takes to achieve our objective.

Description |
I might say that I am at an Intermediate level. I took 2 years of spanish in high school and 3 semesters in college. My last two instructors in college taught by speaking in spanish only, and apparently I understood them enough to have a grade of a 'B'. I finished college in 1997, and from there I lost most of my skills because I never spoke in conversation with it. My accent is quite good and I read spanish much better than I hear or speak it. My boyfriend is Venezuelan and tries to teach me things to say, but I always ask him how to spell it because as a visual learner I need to see the word to remember it. We spent a week in Venezuela visiting family and friends and I was surprised how quickly the spanish I had learned came back to me just by being submersed in the language. I need to learn face to face in a classroom or private lesson format. At least one lesson a week, idealy two a week depending on the cost of lessons and time schedule. I am looking for a native speaker not just to learn the language but the culture as well.
