I grew up in Calcutta/Kolk ata (first 12 years, my father was the Resident Engineer at Woodlands Nursing Home, Alipore) and actually understood and spoke Bengali at one point ages ago, and am now returning to learning regional Indian languages. For the past year, I have been learning Bengali and Punjabi on my own - writing the scripts out every few days, listening to YT videos (Pebbles and other channels), and watching Bengali/Punja bi movies (where I can understand about 50-60% of the dialog, depending on the complexity of the movie - I'm watching Kelor Kirti now-a-days - takes me about 2-3 days to watch each movie, as I watch for a bit during dinner).
So, this is both a hobby and a passion. My goal is to learn as many regional languages as I can (I can also understand a bit of Marathi, as I lived and worked in IIT Bombay and visited it often as a child (1974 - 1990), as my maternal uncles were based there).
My proficiency in Bengali is: Beginner.
I am most interested in learning spoken/conver sational Bengali and improving my vocabulary, so that I can hold a conversation with Bengali friends and be on my own in Kolkata! :-)
I would like to have a 30-45 minute lesson for spoken Bengali, at least once per week.
I am looking for a teacher that knows how to work with motivated, dedicated students, and with students who are clear about their goals, and has the skill, ability, patience and dedication to work with such serious students to see them achieve real progress.
My ideal teacher would be someone who is obviously proficient in Bengali, can explain some of the grammar (enough to speak things right), and can help to me get conversationa lly strong. And, also improve my understanding of Bengali movies! :-)

I have always been fascinated with foreign languages and have wanted to learn a language different that English for as long as I can remember. In high school, I got very involved in watching and listening to a lot of media in Korean and Mandarin. I decided that choosing one of those to learn would be best since I could expose myself to a lot of media in that language. I chose Korean. I began studying but due to a very busy start to college, was unable to get past learning alphabet, simple phrase, and very basic grammar. If not for COVID, I would have spent a year teaching Math and English in South Korea. I hope to possibly look into opportunities to possibly teach over there for a period of time when and if I get the chance. My proficiency level is beginner but I am willing to dedicate the time needed to work towards my goals. I want to improve in conversation and understanding most. I hope that my teacher would be someone willing to help me with pronunciation and give me constructive feedback that will help me grow and develop my language capabilities.
