Hi Jane. You asked a fantastic question about a subject of great depth. I have often helped people learning English by offering suggestions on what they have written. You wrote "why they got married" whereas it should be "why did they get married". As far as the situation, in modern times, not all couples practice fidelity. It is more often practiced in secrecy, and it is very sad. The punishment, usually, is the person's own guilt and shame, and it is well deserved.

I touched with Britain literature£¨of course Chinese edition) since junior high school. I am confused by a situation that a couple lived together but each has another mistress. Then why they got married, or just because the novels need the plot? In China, it was immoral and should be to blame and punished.Who can tell me why?
